Best of 2014: New Series

2014 is over and there were plenty of amazing things to happen in the world of comic books over the last 12 months. Here we take a look at best new series.

Lumberjanes
by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Brooke Allen, & Maarta Laiho

Oh, the joy that is Lumberjanes! Written by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis, and illustrated by Brooke Allen with colors by Maarta Laiho, Lumberjanes is a series that anyone can fall in love with. I certainly did with just the first issue.

Lumberjanes is about five friends, Jo, April, Mal, Ripley, and Molly, who go on crazy awesome fun adventures together. They face supernatural creatures, solve mysteries, and do it all while having fun. That is the underlining factor of this book; fun. The fun and joy that Lumberjanes brings on a monthly basis is such a nice change of pace from everything else that is on the stands. Its also got an all female cast, with an all female creative team, which the comic book industry could definitely use more of! Lumberjanes is a breath of fresh air any way you look at it.

Lumberjanes is also the biggest surprise of the year for me in the sense that it's not even a book that is geared towards a 23 year old male, yet I never felt like it wasn't meant for me as I read it. That is the great thing about all-ages comics when done right!

Honorable Mention: Ms. Marvel (G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, Jake Wyatt)
