Greg Capullo with Danny Miki & FCO Placencia
You'll be hard-pressed to find a series on the stands today that looks better than Greg Capullo, Danny Miki, and FCO Plascencia's Batman. Over these last twelve months they have given us one of the most gorgeously consistent books on the shelves. There's something so special about Capullo's artwork that is incredible to me, and that is that he just seems to get better and better from issue to issue, story arc to story arc.
The start of 2014 saw the continuation and end of Zero Year and the start of Endgame, that surprised us all with the return of the Joker. Zero Year was an amazing experience, and it was completely different than everything else that has come before it in this series. That is due, in big part, to FCO Plascencia's coloring. He worked with a much more colorful palette than he had before, which really made these issues stand out among the series as a whole.
When someone is so good at what they do, consistently, for three years, it's hard to come up with things to say that hasn't been said already. At this point, Capullo has nothing to prove to anyone but himself. He is going to keep proving it to everyone that he is the best at what he does, and we're going to keep on believing him because the proof is right in front of us. The name Greg Capullo has become synonymous with Batman, I think for a lot of us, and it's with good reason, too.
Honorable Mention: Jamie McKelvie with Matthew Wilson (The Wicked + The Divine)
